Walter Martin Announces New Album, Performs New Songs on NPR's Tiny Desk

Walter Martin (co-writer/multi-instrumentalist of The Walkmen) announced today the forthcoming release of his new album Reminisce Bar & Grill. His fourth solo record since The Walkmen announced their hiatus in 2013, Reminisce Bar & Grill is set to release in early 2018 via Ile Flottante Music. Today, NPR Music released Walter's Tiny Desk performance which features two new songs from the upcoming album: "I Went Alone On A Solo Australian Tour" and "Me & McAlevey."

Watch Walter Martin Live @ NPR's Tiny Desk HERE.

Reminisce Bar & Grill is one that might throw fans of his two award winning kids' records (2014's We're All Young Together and 2017's My Kinda Music) for a loop. Listeners will still recognize the same affable narrator and quirky musical style as his previous solo work, but here the subject matter is shifted dramatically. With frankness and poignancy, Martin, now a 43-year-old married man with two young children, squarely tackles the subject of adulthood - specifically, his own.

"I think this is my mid-life crisis album," said Walter. "These days my friends and I all seem to be thinking the same dark thoughts - 'What the hell am I doing? What the hell's going on? I'm lost. I'm running out of time and I'm doing everything wrong. And I'm probably dying.' This is definitely an insane period," he continues, "but most of the time I kind of love it."

While Martin approaches these subject matters with candor and sincerity, he clearly also enjoys mining them for humor. "I wanted this album to be an entertaining discussion of marriage, fatherhood, work, fear, and weakness," he explained. "I'm definitely influenced by Woody Allen movies. No matter how serious or romantic or dark his story may be, there's always a strong undercurrent of comedy."

Blind Boys of Alabama Earn GRAMMY Award Nomination for "Best American Roots Performance"

Iconic gospel group Blind Boys of Alabama received this week their tenth nomination from the 2018 60th Grammy Awards. In the American Roots Music Field, they received the nom for "Best American Roots Performance" for their song "Let My Mother Live" off their latest album Almost Home, released this summer on BBOA Records as an Amazon Original. Throughout their eight-decade history, the group has won five Grammy Awards including 2009's Lifetime Achievement Award.

The story of "Let My Mother Live" originates from the childhood of original founding member Jimmy Carter. It recounts the devastating loss of his father in 1945 during a mining accident when Carter was just 12 years-old. The youngest of six boys, Carter and his father were very close and his death lead to a difficult time. Still close with his mother, the family struggled for a while to overcome the loss and make ends meet. When asked during the album interviews "Have you ever asked God for anything?", Carter responded "I asked him to let my mother live 'til I get grown." Fearing the loss of his mother as well, he prayed every night that his mother would live to see him through his adolescence. And she did. She lived until she was 103 years old.

"Let my mother live 'til I get grown / Don't leave me in a God-forsaken world all alone" sings Carter with strength and vulnerability throughout the song. "I was just a boy when my daddy died / He got killed down in the mine in 1945 / I remember people talkin' while my momma cried / I was just a boy when my daddy died."

Coming almost 70 years after the group released its first single, Almost Home serves as a fitting capstone to a career that has helped define the sound of American music. Recorded over four difference sessions with four different Grammy-winning producers in four different cities, Almost Home serves as a musical memoir, telling stories from the lives of original founding members Jimmy Carter and Clarence Fountain (both now in their eighties), through new, original songs written by Valerie JuneNorth Mississippi AllstarsJohn LeventhalRuthie FosterMarc Cohn, and others.

On August 11th, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Suzanne Santo will release her solo debut album Ruby Red. Best known as one-half of the Americana duo HONEYHONEY, Santo steps out on her own for the first time and, more than 10 years into an acclaimed career, turns a new corner. Today, she released lead single "Ghost In My Bed," premiered by Rolling Stone who stated "'Ghost in my Bed' barrels forward at highway speed, folding mandolin, fiddle and keyboards into a nocturnal track about waging war with - and, ultimately, losing ground to - one's darker side."

Swedish Artist Daniel Norgren Makes His US Introduction

Swedish folk-rock artist Daniel Norgren makes his US introduction with Skogens Frukter (Fruits of the Forest), a limited edition vinyl-only issue on marbled Northern Lights colored vinyl available now exclusively through Vinyl Me, Please. To celebrate the release, NPR Music debuted a live video of "People Are Good," a previously unreleased song that's featured on the album.

Last summer, he played his first ever US show at Pickathon 2016 and became the must-see act of the weekend following three sets in front of stunned audiences. Although his name may be unfamiliar in the US, Norgren has built an astounding career over the past 10 years in his home country and across Europe including an extensive catalog and an exponentially-growing audience where fans would be lucky to catch him at a venue smaller than 1,000 people. A multi-instrumentalist whose expertise includes guitar, piano, harmonica, and accordion, Norgren's sound is distinctly homegrown, authentic, and powerful.
